-----

Thought I'd make a usefull post for once. Sorry if credit is not given where it should be, I will add it as soon as it is brought to my attention. I didn't put much time or effort into this, so there may be alot of things missing or out of place or 'half-assed' looking. None of this is stolen, it was written myself so if it has any similarity to another guide, please point it out. This is not meant to be a serious guide, even though it looks like it :P I'll gladly add more glitches and tricks if anyone would like me to add them. And don't hesitate to point out any mistakes/errors in the guide.

The first game, Sonic 1, is VERY easy to follow and is intended to be a 'starter' for people just learning about debug mode, and from there any n00b could follow the remainder of this guide. This is after all just for n00bs.

One other thing, I refer to debug mode as ENABLING debug mode (the code). And 'object placement' is pressing the B button to access the various objects. Though this is not the term most people use, I am adding it to clarify things, so that anyone that is new can understand what to do and how.

NEWBIE'S GUIDE TO THE DEBUG MODE

Nice original name eh? *Killed by Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy fans*

SONIC 1
---

LEVEL SELECT
Wait until Sonic appears on the title screen and waves his finger. Then quickly press UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT. You should hear a ring sound and press A and START at the same time. If you've done it correctly, you should see the level select screen. If not, RESET and try again. If this doesn't work, try holding A and then pressing START instead of at the same time. Remember to do all of this quickly, the demo comes up pretty fast!

When you get to the level select, simply highlight the level you want and press START. You can also go all the way down and play the Final Zone, enter the first Special Stage, or listen to some of the game's sounds by highlighting Sound Select and pressing LEFT or RIGHT to change the number and pressing A, B, or C to play the sound.

DEBUG MODE
Do the same as above but this time press UP, C, DOWN, C, LEFT, C, RIGHT, C. You should hear another ring and press A and START at the same time. You will get the level select again, but now you are in debug mode. Select a level, and hold the A button and press START. Hold the A button until the level comes up. In debug mode, you are invincible. Well, sort of. You can get hit by badniks, land on spikes, get burned or even get sawed and you won't die. You will, however, lose your rings when hit and if you fall into a pit or get crushed, you will die. When you want a new level, you don't have to enter the cheat again, just press START to pause the game and then hold A. Continuing to hold A, wait for Sonic to pop up then press START and now you are back at the level select screen! Also, you have a new set of controls in this mode which may vary from game to game:

A = Jump
B = Object Placement
C = Jump

Press B and you will turn into a ring. This is OBJECT PLACEMENT mode. There is yet another set of controls for this mode:

Object Placement controls:
A = Change selected object
B = Return to Sonic
C = Place selected object

And finally PAUSE mode, in which the game is paused.

Paused controls:
A = Reset
B = Hold for slow motion
C = Next frame of animation

While you are in object placement mode, use the D-pad to move the object like a cursor on a computer. You can select alot of common objects you may see thoughout the level and place them where ever you want. Rings, Badniks, Monitors, Springs or whatever is available for that particular level. Simply press A until you find an object you want, press C to place that object, and then press B to return to normal so you can interact with the object. Notice that Sonic reappears where you have placed your 'object cursor'. You can enter object placement mode and move to secret areas or even where you aren't supposed to be and then return to normal without the hastle of badniks and other dangers!

EASY/ALL EMERALDS
Enter the debug code and when you are at the level select screen, go down to SPECIAL STAGE and hold the A button and press START. Hold A until the level appears and quickly enter OBJECT PLACEMENT. Now you can simply move your cursor as before, find the emerald, then go back to normal and you've got it! EASY! Now, to get the rest of the emeralds, wait for Green Hill Zone to appear. Press START to pause then press and hold A, then when the title screen appears press START to enter level select and go back to SPECIAL STAGE and repeat until you have them all and then you can continue to play from Green Hill Zone, or go back to the level select screen and enter the Final Zone and beat the game!

ALL BLUE EMERALDS
This trick is exactly like getting the normal emeralds exept that you don't get the emerald inside the maze. This time, you want to go outside the maze a little way using OBJECT PLACEMENT and then turn to normal. You will fall pretty fast and may see some garbage fly by, but eventualy you'll hit some solid garbage. Hopefully, you will see a blue emerald nearby. Try to jump and grab it. Don't use object placement to get it, or you will be sent to the top of the normal maze. Not every try will yeald an emerald, so if you don't see one or hit the goal, just keep trying until all you have are blue emeralds!

ADDITIONAL DEBUG TRICKS
-To make an object appear upside down, go up a ramp and wait for Sonic to be sort of upside down and then quickly hit B. The object cursor should now be upside down. Cycle through the objects to see what they look like and what they do upside down! This trick can be done in all of the games in this guide.

-Place a bunch of breakable objects in one place that yeald points. Return to normal and jump onto them. Sonic will continue to bounce and bounce and eventualy your points will increase until you get an extra life. You will get lives faster as the points muliply! This trick can be done in all of the games in this guide.

UNUSUAL THINGS
-Go to Scrap Brain Zone 2 and finish the level. Robotnik will hit a switch and the floor will colapse sending you to Scrap Brain Zone 3. Before he does, go into object placement mode and get behind the force field where Robotnik is. If you run into him, you will lose any rings you had. If you have no rings, you will die. However, if you jump on him, you will lightly bounce off of him and he becomes harmless. That showed him eh?

LEVEL SELECT
On the title screen, press DOWN until you have OPTIONS selected. Press START and when the options screen comes up, go down to SOUND TEST. The controls are:

A = Skip 16 sounds
B = ???
C = Playes selected sound.

Play the sounds 19, 65, 9, 17 in that order and you should hear a ring sound. Hold A and press START. Continue to hold A until the title screen fully appears and press START again. You should now see the level select screen. You can get there faster by holding A and pressing START repeatedly after entering the sound test code.

DEBUG MODE
Enter the level select and find the new sound test at the bottom right corner. Play the sounds 1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4 in that order and you should hear the ring sound again. Now choose a level and hold A and press START. New controls are:

A = Jump
B = Object Placement
C = Jump

Object Placement controls:
A = Change selected object
B = Return to Sonic
C = Place selected object

Paused controls:
A = Reset
B = Hold for slow motion
C = Next frame of animation

ALL EMERALDS
Enter the level select and play the sounds 4, 1, 2, 6 in that order and you should hear the emerald sound. Now you can collect 50 rings and be Super Sonic!

MILES/TAILS
To change Tails' name to Miles, enter UP, UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, UP at the title screen. Enter the code again to change it back. An alternate way of entering this code is Up, Up, DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, DOWN.

CONSTANT OIL OCEAN MUSIC
In the options screen sound test, enter the same code for debug mode. 1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4. The music from Oil Ocean Zone should now play constantly and there is no other sound. Even when you die or get game over the music will continue.

14 CONTINUES(OOZ MUSIC)
Enter the level select code, then go back to the options screen. Enter the last four digits of the debug code, 1, 1, 2, 4. Now highlight the player select at the top and press START.

NIGHT MODE
At the level select screen, select a level, hold C and press START.

NO BOSS MUSIC
Before starting a fight with a boss, pause and hold B to go in slow motion. When the boss appears, unpause. The zone music continues to play.

WARP TO END OF STAGE
Enter object placement mode (B) when you start the level and press left. While holding left, press B again and the screen will begin to scroll realy fast and it will eventualy catch up to sonic who is already at the end.

ASHURA SONIC
In Emerald Hill Zone, using object placement, select the large waterfall which will apear to be a blank object, but you can see the very bottom of it if you bring the object up. Begin hitting the C button repeatedly while moving the object back and fourth around the same area. Try to keep the speed up; don't stop moving the object completely. Eventualy the lives icon will begin to change color. Continue doing what you are doing until he looks green. Then exit object placement. You will be this lime color until you finish the zone or die.

STRANGE PHISICS IN OIL OCEAN
Using object placement, find the green and yellow checkered looking thing that you break to be launched through the air. Place one and break it, then quickly enter back to object placement. Then quickly return to Sonic again. Sonic will jump way higher and run faster while in the state. Turn into Super Sonic for added effect!

TWO AIRPLANES
In Sky Chase Zone, simply place a warp monitor and break it. You will hear Sonic die, but quickly enter object placement and save him. Now move up and find Tails' airplane and exit object placement. You should now have two instances of Tail's airplane!

SUPER TAILS
Enable debug mode and all emeralds and go to a zone. Become Super Sonic and then place a warp monitor and break it. Tails will be super fast and have sparkles around him. But, even though you look like Super Sonic, you aren't. Get hit and lose your rings, then become Super Sonic again and now both Sonic AND Tails are invincible.

MULTIPLE ROBOT BOSS
Only do this for a good laugh or if you enjoy general chaos. Go to Deathegg Zone and begin the battle with Silver Sonic. Now, place a warp monitor (the only other thing available) and break it. You will apear in a wall. Press left and you will warp and die. Quickly go back to object placement to save yourself and head back to where Silver Sonic is. Notice the screen isn't locked? Now you can chase Robotnik to his Robot, then go back to Silver Sonic and battle both at once! Or, keep going back and fourth to create multiple instances of the Robot Boss!

GLITCHY SNAIL
Go to Emerald Hill Zone and place a snail badnik ontop of a loop. Place a plat form just above loop in the center for Sonic to stand on. The snail badnik will run back and fourth until it somehow gets stuck on the edge of the loop and begins turning left and right, slowly sliding down the side of the loop. Eventualy reaching the ground where it can't move anymore.

FRUITY COLORED SONIC
Go to any zone that has water. Using object placement, find a nice solid place underwater, or make one. Select the 4th object from the ring (a platform) and begin placing a bunch of them around. You will see the life icon change color. Now return to normal and you will be like this while underwater, and will change color depending on what objects are on screen.

WEIRED SOUNDS/MUSIC
-Get 100 rings and the Deathegg Zone music will play.
-Wait underwater until you run low on air and the level select music will play...
-Jump out of the water and Emerald Hill Zone Music will play.
-Do the fruity Sonic trick in Hidden Palace Zone and get the level select music to play, then while making some of the platforms break (making sound) jump from the water and the music will get messed up for a few seconds and you may hear some strange sounds.

SONIC 3
---

LEVEL SELECT/DEBUG MODE
This code is not even worth trying as it requires a VERY fast reaction time and very fast hands. It is easyer to just play Sonic 3 & Knuckles and enter the cheat described later. Anyways, right after the 'SEGA' screen goes away, right when you JUST start to see Sonic apear, QUICKLY enter UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, UP, UP, UP, UP. You have to do it before the title screen apears or the code will not work. If you've done it correctly (congradulations), you should have heard a ring sound when you finished the code. To make sure, press DOWN at the title screen until you see 'SOUND TEST'. If its there, you'd be a great Banjo player. Select a level and hold A and press START. New controls:

A = Reverse gravity
B = Object Placement
C = Jump

Object Placement controls:
A = Change selected object
B = Return to Sonic
C = Place selected object

Paused controls:
A = Reset
B = Hold for slow motion
C = Next frame of animation

ALTERNATE MINIBOSS MUSIC
When in the sound test, find the music for the miniboss. This music is different in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.(Or when the Sonic 3 cart is attached to the Sonic & Knuckles cart.)

STRANGE RED SPHERES
Enable the sound test and go to Angel Island Zone with debug mode. Enter object placement and find the little red sphere. Place one and move sonic around until you can see a huge cluster of them moving about. Use controller 2 to control the movement of these spheres.

UNUSED SNOWBOARDING/SURFING ANIMATIONS
Again go to Angel Island and enter object placement. Find the thing that looks a bit like Sonic and place it. It is sonic on a snowboard and he just floats around and goes through the different animations until he floats off screen.

---
SONIC 2 & KNUCKLES
---

LEVEL SELECT
At the title screen, press UP, UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT. You should have heard a ring when you completed the code. Now hold A and press START.

DEBUG MODE
Enter the level select screen and play the sounds 1, 9, 9, 4, 1, 0, 1, 8. You should hear a ring sound. Now choose a level and hold A and press START. New controls are:

A = Jump
B = Object Placement
C = Jump

Object Placement controls:
A = Change selected object
B = Return to Sonic
C = Place selected object

Paused controls:
A = Reset
B = Hold for slow motion
C = Next frame of animation

---
SONIC 3 & KNUCKLES
---

LEVEL SELECT
At the title screen, press start to enter the game select. Choose 'NO SAVE' and press start. You will start at Angel Island Zone. Find a swinging vine and while swinging press LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT, UP, UP, UP. You should hear a ring sound. Pause the game and hold the A button. When the title screen apears, press down until you see 'SOUND TEST'.

DEBUG MODE
Enter the sound test and go to Mushroom Hill Zone. Find one of the pully things that you use to go up. While hanging, enter the same code as the level select, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT, UP, UP, UP. You should hear a ring sound. Pause the game and hold the A button. When the title screen apears, press down until you see 'SOUND TEST'. Now, select a level, hold the A button and press START. New controls:

A = Reverse gravity
B = Object Placement
C = Jump

Object Placement controls:
A = Change selected object
B = Return to Sonic
C = Place selected object

Paused controls:
A = Reset
B = Hold for slow motion
C = Next frame of animation

PINBALL MODE IN SANDOPOLIS
In Sandopolis Zone, find a colapsing ledge that is above some quicksand (Usualy located on the side of large grey towers with rope things). When you are ready, walk onto the ledge and and do a spindash. Hold it there until the ledge breaks and you fall into the sand. Now just keep jumping until you get out and onto some solid ground. You should now be in pinball mode. You can't jump or turn around, you have to wait till you get a lot of resistance before you can change direction such as a wall or steep incline. If a badnik hits you, hit a spring, fall off a ledge or any of the combination, you will come out of the pinball mode. You can do this trick in other places using object placement.

J'adore tricher!

Sonic & Knuckles : Level Select
Se suspendre qq part, faire LLLRRRUUU (Left x3 / Right x3  / Up x3), Start, A, et enfin A+Start à l'écran-titre.
